Students discussed the situation of «environmental refugees» at MUNRFE Round Table 2017

On March 20 – April 1 Vladivostok MUNRFE Club conducted the project named as «MUNRFE Round Table 2017» for students of the Far Eastern Federal University under the leadership of its Coordinators, namely Mr. Andrew Moon and Ms. Ekaterina Zamulina.

During 2 weeks of the project more than 30 students were expanding their knowledge on such important topics as International Relations, International Law and Ecology by means of listening to lectures delivered by experienced MUNRFE members as well as high-qualified FEFU professors and experts.

Ms. Elena A. Kiseleva, MUNRFE Executive Director and a prizewinner of National Model United Nations conferences both in New York (USA) and Incheon (ROK), got participants acquainted with the information about the United Nations, its structure, functions and ambitious Sustainable Development Goals that the global community is striving to tackle until 2030.

Dr. Viacheslav V. Gavrilov, Head of the FEFU Department of International Public and Private Law, explained the principles of International Law and described its sources as well as analyzed the role of the United Nations as one of the key characters in this sphere.

Dr. Luca Belelli Marchesini, Leading Researcher of the Far Eastern Climate Smart Lab, graphically demonstrated the relevance of the issue of global climate change and explained how this phenomenon already influences on the lives of millions of people around the world.

Moreover, participants took part in the special trainings aimed at raising competencies in public speaking and debates’ procedural rules in order to be prepared for the main event of the Round Table – Final Debates.

On April 1, young leaders performed as diplomats at the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and debated upon the agenda “Influence of Climate Change on External Displacement”. In the end of the session delegates adopted the resolution upon aforementioned topic proclaiming several measures in order to tackle the issue of externally displaced people due to global climate change.

As a result of hard and active involvement in the process, the Round Table had two awardees, particularly:

The author of the best essay – Ms. Polina Eremeeva (School of Law);

The outstanding delegate of the Round Table – Ms. Veronika Tkachenko (Institute of Oriental Studies - School of Regional and International Relations), who received free participation at the Far Eastern Model United Nations 2017, the only conference applying UN4MUN format in Russia.

MUNRFE expresses its deepest congratulations to the winners and is looking forward to seeing all participants of the Round Table at FEMUN 2017!
