Sunday, 17 May 2020 10:30

On May 15, the Opening Ceremony of the Far Eastern Model United Nations (FEMUN) 2020 was successfully conducted. Moreover, this date was marked by the first-ever MUNRFE online event, as the Conference had to switch to online format due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Opening of the first General Assembly Plenary Meeting gathered more than 150 delegates, which is an absolute record for any MUNRFE event. FEMUN 2020 attracted delegates from India, Kazakhstan, Japan, Brazil, South Africa, China, Vietnam, and 15 different cities of Russia.

The delegates had an honor to receive welcoming addresses from the following speakers: Mr. Nikita Yu. Anisimov – FEFU President, Ms. Daria Zlydar – the Secretary-General of the Far Eastern Model UN 2020, Mr. Aleksei Stanonis – MUNRFE Acting Executive Director. The distinguished speakers stressed the importance of staying connected during these difficult times and emphasized the changes that pandemic has brought to our day-to-day lives. However, at the same time, they highlighted the significance of cross-border opportunities that were opened due to the online format. Further, the General Assembly President the representative of Finland, Peru, Germany, and the Republic of Korea delivered their statements upon the agenda, titled “Strengthening Partnerships to Achieve 2030 Agenda”.

After the Opening Plenary, FEMUN 2020 delegates had a chance to attend the lecture delivered by Mr. Aleksei Stanonis. The lecture was devoted to the history, structure, and present issues of the United Nations and the importance of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The lecture was followed by the Workshop on 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development during which the delegates had a chance to share their ideas on how they can contribute to the implementation of the SDGs.

The second day of the FEMUN 2020 started with the UN4MUN lecture presented by MUNRFE Councilor Ms. Alexandra Kosyreva. The delegates learned about the peculiarities of the UN4MUN format and consensus. Afterward, the participants were provided with the document writing training conducted by Ms. Alexandra Chernysheva. Delegates had a chance to discuss the process of writing Declarations and Presidential Statements. The skills and knowledge gained at these lectures will be essential during the next days of the Conference.

The last but not the least event of the second day was the interactive dialogue with invited experts, including Dr. Mia Mikic, Director of the Trade, Investment, and Innovation Division of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for the Asia and the Pacific, Dr. Melita Vujnovic, World Health Organization Representative to the Russian Federation, Ms. Natalia Zhurina, CTBTO Youth Group Coordinator for Eastern Europe who is currently working as a Research Officer in the Organization for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean. Experts delivered lectures on various topics, answered questions of the delegates, and wished them successful implementation of the Conference.

MUNRFE expresses its deepest gratitude to the distinguished speakers and invited experts, congratulates everyone on the successful start of the Conference, and wishes FEMUN participants good luck!
