MUNRFE at the National Model United Nations 2015 in New York
On 22-26 March 2015, the New York National Model United Nations (NMUN-NY) 2015 opened its doors to thousands of young leaders from various parts of the world, including the Russian Far East. For the fifth year, MUNRFE delegates have been demonstrating their remarkable debate and negotiations skills while participating in the largest model UN conference sponsored by the National Collegiate Conference Association and supported by the United Nations. This time, our delegation achieved new notable results and set the higher standards for prospective “NY-teams” of MUNRFE.
The current team was assigned to represent the Republic of South Sudan in five organs of the United Nations. The winners of the Annual MUNRFE Conference 2014 – Ms. Elena Kiseleva and Ms. Victoria Yavorskaya, were successfully participating in the work of GA First Committee and Economic Commission for Africa respectively. The adviser of the delegation, Secretary-General of the mentioned Conference – Ms. Olga V. Katina, debated in the Third Committee of GA, and the Director-General of the Organization – Mr. Vitaliy E. Savenkov, was allotted to the Second Committee. Moreover, MUNRFE had one more member to take part in NMUN NY 2015 but not as a delegate. Ms. Anna Ivanova has been successfully selected and peformed the duties of the Assistant Director of the Economic Commission for Africa, being the first MUNRFE member on staff with NMUN and NCCA.
From the very beginning of the Conference the delegation did their best to be recognized, and continued the glorious trend set by the MUNRFE Team to NMUN-NY 2014. On the first day, Mr. Savenkov was chosen among the dozens of other candidates to serve as a Rapporteur of the GA First Committee. For the next three days, he became a part of the NMUN-NY Secretariat and worked hard for the sake of smooth and productive work of his Committee. Vitaliy carried out his duties on the high professional level, conducting the roll calls, voting procedures, processing notes and documents, generally, managing the work of one of the biggest committees joining around three hundred young diplomats.
The rest of the delegation were debating in their respective committees, discussing wide range of topics, including disarmament and security, development of African economies, and human rights. During the breaks, delegates had an opportunity to not only have some rest, but also widen their knowledge in international issues of current importance. At the special seminars, participants could learn from invited experts and share their own experience and opinions on such problems as violent extremism, disarmament and arms control, impact of media in international affairs, business vs. charity. Among the speakers and moderators, there were representatives of the Permanent Observer Mission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to the UN, New York Times, Osgood Center for International Studies, United Nations Global Compact, etc.
By the end of the Conference, the first results of the delegates’ hard work were announced: the outstanding delegates and authors of the best position papers were awarded with the certificates. According to the results of the Position Paper evaluation, Ms. Victoria Yavorskaya and Ms. Olga V. Katina for the first time of MUNRFE participation in NMUN got the Outstanding Position Paper awards. The GA Plenary session and Closing Ceremony of the NMUN-NY 2015 were held in United Nations General Assembly Hall, where all the participants had an honor to listen to the speech of the Permanent Representative of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, H.E. Mrs. Dina Kawar. In the end of the Ceremony in these remarkable chambers MUNRFE was called a Distinguished Delegation. Thanks to the hard work of this small, but purposeful team, and contributors to their preparation, the Organization continues its successful performance at the international events of such scale, resulting the second in a row Delegation award at New York NMUN.
In the end, MUNRFE would like to share perhaps the most important feedback regarding this Conference. This trip of MUNRFE delegation will never be possible without the immeasurable amount of support from MUNRFE alumni – those bright professionals who have grown up under exclusive MUNRFE umbrella. The Board would like to express the deepest appreciation to each and every alumnus who has been a part of this process, including but not limited to: Mr. Vyacheslav Shirokov, Ms. Evgenia Lindstrom, Mr. Andrey Romanyuk, Mr. Evgeniy Malorosianov, Mr. Zakhar Ivanisov, Ms. Natalia Martynova, Ms. Olga Karyakina, Mr. Dmitry Gazzaev, Mr. Vladislav Sklyanov, Ms. Darya Povedaiko, Ms. Anna Birykova, Ms. Olga Bukach, Ms. Julia Poroshenko, Ms. Ekaterina Timokhina, Mr. Yuriy Govorushko, Mr. Alexey Kumshatskiy, and all other committed people.
