Far Eastern Model UN 2016: Report
It is now pride and honor for MUNRFE to become the pioneer in the Russian Federation that has implemented the first Model UN Conference, using the UN4MUN approach developed by the United Nations Department for Public Information – the Far Eastern Model UN (FEMUN) 2016.
The Conference has been successfully implemented on May 5-8 in the campus of the Far Eastern Federal University, Vladivostok, Russia under the leadership of Secretary-General, Elena A. Kiseleva and Under-Secretary-General for GA Affairs and Conference Management, Ms. Victoria V. Yavorskaya. Overall FEMUN 2016 gathered an approximate number of 60 delegates from Moscow, Novosibirsk, Khabarovsk, Blagoveshchensk and Vladivostok, including foreign representatives from the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of Korea, Indonesia and Zambia.
FEMUN 2016 was marked with attendance of the following high profile speakers: the Head of the Division of Scholarship and Grant programs, FEFU Department of Youth Affairs – Ms. Natalia E. Spichenkova and the Attaché of the Representation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia in Vladivostok – Mr. Alexey V. Shchetinin, who welcomed the delegates at the Opening Ceremony along with the welcoming speeches by MUNRFE Director-General – Mr. Vitaly E. Savenkov and the Acting Secretary-General of the Far Eastern Model UN 2016 – Ms. Ksenia O. Shevtsova. Moreover the participants were exclusively addressed with the welcoming video message from Mr. Vladimir V. Kuznetsov, the Director of the United Nations Information Center in Moscow.
Following the UN4MUN approach, throughout the Conference the delegates were involved in a wide range of trainings and lectures organized and implemented by the FEMUN 2016 Secretariat and MUNRFE Director-General Mr. Vitaly Savenkov, who had acquired extensive UN4MUN background at the WFUNA International MUN conferences 2015 and 2016. Besides, the delegates had an opportunity to plunge into the topic of sustainable development during the briefing session “Agenda 2030” conducted by the Director of FEFU Institute of Oriental Studies – School of Regional and International Studies, Dr. Victoria V. Panova. Moreover, it is a great privilege for MUNRFE to have the delegates participated in the webinar on resolution writing with the main author of UN4MUN concept, Mr. William Yotive, the former Project Coordinator for the Global Teaching and Learning Project of the Education Outreach section, Outreach Division of the UN Department of Public Information, who currently works as Model UN Coordinator at the WFUNA.
In accordance with UN4MUN procedure, delegates play a more substantive role in the Conference rather than they do in typical MUN simulations, so the Elections of the UN General Assembly Officials were conducted prior FEMUN 2016. According to the results, the following representatives were elected and further have successfully performed their duties of the GA Officials:
President of the General Assembly - Mr. Daniel Amirul (United Kingdom)
Chairperson for the General Assembly 2nd Committee - Ms. Anastasia Popova (Egypt)
Chairperson for the General Assembly 3rd Committee - Ms. Saykho Mongush (Japan)
The duties of the Security Council President were performed by Ms. Alena Filinomova (Egypt) in accordance with the rotation order of the UN Security Council members.
Throughout the Conference the delegates were striving to achieve a common vision in frames of each committee and, as an ultimate goal, to reach consensus while discussing most urgent global issues. As a result, both GA resolutions were adopted by consensus in both GA committees simulated at the Conference, as well as the Security Council passed its resolution by a unanimous vote. In this regard, the Secretariat believes the delegates have demonstrated their full commitment to fulfill one of the most important goals in decision-making process, alike in the real United Nations. Besides, particular delegates have demonstrated outstanding results in the fields of documents writing and diplomacy. These delegates and delegations were granted with honorable awards:
