IREX UGRAD-2009 Winners
Who said that it is impossible to study in the USA for free when there is no free education at all in this country?
Who said that it is impossible to pass TOEFL without attending special courses?
Who said that it is impossible for your application to be chosen from 1200 applications of not less talented and ambitious students of the whole Russia?
Members of Model United Nations of the Russian Far East (MUNRFE) annually break these stereotypes and win Global Undergraduate Exchange Program in Eurasia & Central Asia (UGRAD).
Global UGRAD is administered by IREX, Council on international investigations and exchanges, work of which is financed by the U.S. Department of State, and provides an opportunity for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students to live and study for free in the U.S. University for a year. Selection process starts in December and finishes in April and has two stages.
The first stage is preparation of documents package which includes 3 essays, 2 reference forms, course list and application. This year IREX received more than 1200 documents packages only in Russia, one Vladivostok IREX office gathered and sent more than 70 applications. Only 40 students became semi-finalists and were accepted to participate in the second stage: TOEFL and interview with IREX representatives in Moscow. And only 20 semi-finalists became finalists and were granted the whole year of studying in universities of the USA.
2-stages selection process on UGRAD is very difficult and serious, it demands applicants to show such skills and experience as:
• Leadership potential
• Social and community work
• Open mind
• Cultural exchange orientation
• Target on professional and personal growth
• Desire to improve and make the world around better.
But as members of MUNRFE constantly develop these skills within organization, participating and organizing different projects, quantity of UGRAD winners is increasing from year to year.
For the last two years, 8 MUNRFE members became program finalists with 4 of them this year. 2007-2008 UGRAD finalist: Artem Danilov (Blagoveshchensk MUN club). 2008-2009 UGRAD finalists: Eduard Romanenko (Vladivostok MUN club), Anton Pak (Vladivostok MUN club), Natalia Konstantinovskaya (Khabarovsk MUN club). 2009-2010 UGRAD finalists: Roman Naumenko (Vladivostok MUN club), Anastasiya Skripnik (Vladivostok MUN club), Anna Samoilenko (Vladivostok MUN club), Violetta Davydenko (Blagoveshchensk MUN club).
This exchange program is the greatest opportunity to reopen America for yourself, receive deep knowledge in your major, feel and understand American life through life within their students community, gain a lot of new experience while having internship, community work, traveling or celebrating holidays with host family.
