AIMUN: 3 Outstanding Delegates, or Oriental-style diplomacy
3 Outstanding delegate awards – this is the result achieved by the MUNRFE delegation at the biggest Model UN Conference in Beijing, People’s Republic of China.
Asian International Model United Nations (AIMUN) was conducted from 28 to 31 of March on the basis of Peking University and gathered more than 500 delegates from 10 countries. MUNRFE delegates participated in 3 out of 8 committees of the Conference, namely the Security Council, the United Nations Environmental Programne and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Of course, it is a great pleasure and honor that all our delegates were able to overcome all difficulties during the debates process and showed their great debate and leadership skills.
As one of the central conferences in Asia, AIMUN has its distinctive feature – an absolutely different mental model of majority of delegates, if to compare it with the average delegates at MUNRFE International Conferences or Conferences in Europe and North America. That is why the approach one should use in order to succeed is special.
Besides the good result at the debates itself (which is the continuation of our tradition to be among the best in frames of AIMUN Conferences), MUNRFE delegation managed to establish some contacts with representatives of Chinese MUN Clubs and Associations; these contacts will definitely help us to make our International Conference bigger and better.
Last, but not the least, the AIMUN 2013 Team, comprised of Sergey Lebedev, Alexander Druzhinin and Anna Murzakova (with Andrey Kozinets being the adviser) wants to express their deep gratitude to everyone who contributed to the Team’s preparation, to members of Khabarovsk MUNRFE Club for their participation in the Training Debates Session and to Sergey Gorbenko especially, who was not able to go to Beijing only due to the passport issues. However, Sergey participated in the full scale in the trainings of the Team and, for sure, made a great contribution to the success of his colleagues.
P.S.: Below you can find personal reflections of MUNRFE delegates about the Conference in Beijing.
When we were coming to Beijing it was night. The only cabbalistic obscurity was around us. Only in the morning we were able to understand that magnificent Beijing is everywhere around us.
The AIMUN conference resembled the MUNRFE one, but practically it is the one turned upside down. First day seemed to be the dark night in this frames. You could feel in a distinct way the mental model difference in the air like you breathe the coolness of summer night with your lungs. After some time the sun started to peek out and in the sunbeams you were able to see familiar traits. The most important was to move forward no matter what is happening around you the dark or the light. I would say the AIMUN was like a dawn lasting about four days. I have to thank our team and adviser for being there with me in the dark. As for last words, I’d say you’ve got to be present there in order to see the atmosphere and in order to be the atmosphere yourself.
Anna Murzakova
When asked to write a couple of words about our trip to Beijing, I was completely stuck in thoughts. It was my first trip abroad with MUNRFE in my almost three year career. The fate has determined my paths from the West (I supposed to join the NMUN team) to the East, the Asian International Model United Nations conference in China. The opportunity of feel the unique, Oriental diplomacy, the spirit of traditions and innovation was a great shift in my way of thinking. Despite all challenges and uncertainties, I proudly say that I’m still a member of the team of the best people: Anya Murzakova, Sergey Lebedev, our amazing and supportive adviser Andrey Kozinets. I shall also mention Ekaterina Vognerubova, who made it all the way from Shenyang to support us. It is impossible to reflect my personal feelings and feelings of my dear teammates, but what I can say for sure is that AIMUN Team-2013 has rocked China in all meanings! 老外们谢谢!
Alexander Druzhinin
During preparation to the AIMUN 2013 I could already expect the mail challenge during debating – specific cultural mentality of Asian people and its reflection to the debating style. And when the first Security Council session began, I understood that my predictions were true, but as a delegate managed to predict it, it’s already not a challenge – but a strong force a delegate shall operate. Debating in the AIMUN Security Council was more difficult than all debates in the VII, VIII, IX and X MUNRFE IC Security Councils merged together; and surprisingly that was not because of my poor preparation, but due to cultural misperceptions with Asian debaters. And, when I found myself among outstanding delegates, it was a special pleasure to understand that all efforts were highly evaluated and our cultural incomprehension was temporary.
Peking MUN Conference for all its participants is always a unique step in your MUN experience and I am really glad to be with our wonderful team, that managed to find the team spirit and invest it into the common victory in Beijing.
