"THE SITUATION IN THE UKRAINE" PROJECT IN VLADIVOSTOK CLUB
In the mid-March, Vladivostok MUNRFE Club has successfully conducted a comprehensive project on the “Situation in the Ukraine” under the leadership of Ms. Alina Sharabarina and Ms. Viktoria Yavorskaya in Far Eastern Federal University. The project, accomplished in Russian language, included several lectures and trainings aimed at preparation of the prospective delegates for the simulation of the UN Security Council meeting in the very end.
The project was started on March, 17, with the lecture by the head of the International Relations Department Associate Prof. Tamara G. Troyakova, Ph.D. and Associate Prof. Andrey V. Gubin, Ph.D. regarding the basics of international relations system in general and Eastern European focus in particular. More than 70 FEFU students attended the lecture and were significantly interested in the roots of the present conflict in the Ukraine.
The discussion has been continued during the second day of the project, on March, 20, when MUNRFE members took the floor to share their knowledge with the participants. Ms. Olga Katina, one of the most experienced MUNRFE member, who was a National MUN delegate, as well as several times MUNRFE Secretariat officer, delivered a lecture about the structure of the United Nations in general and the Security Council in particular. She also gave her valuable advice about the process of debates, making preparation and choosing a particular strategy while discussing the agenda item. After that, Mr. Vitaliy Savenkov, MUNRFE Director-General, has briefed the students about major opinions and positions within the international community regarding the Ukrainian crisis and initiated a discussion about possible solutions of the problem.
The last day of the project, March, 22, became a unique chance for participants to try themselves in using knowledge they got attending the lectures. While representing SC Member States and the Ukraine, the delegates managed to behave in a professional manner, despite the spirit of contradiction between a number of countries. Unfortunately, 3 hours were not enough to start writing a resolution, though the solutions were formulated during unofficial debates, called caucus. After the session, presided by the Chairperson Ms. Olga Katina and the Vice-Chairperson Mr. Dmitriy Kharkhan, the invited expert Mr. Semyon Korotich, MUNRFE alumnus, gave a conclusion and his feedbacks about delegates’ performance.
