MUNRFE at the National Model United Nations 2014 in New York
The team from MUNRFE that represented the Lao People’s Democratic Republic at the National MUN Conference (March, 30 - April, 3) in New York under the leadership of Ms. Ksenia Severinova as an adviser, was awarded with a certificate of an “Outstanding Delegation” for showing their extraordinary performance. The National Model UN is considered to be one of the biggest and most prestigious Model UN in the world, uniting annually more than 5000 university students. Those members of MUNRFE were granted the credentials to represent the Organization at such high-level event after their victory in the last International MUNRFE Conference in Vladivostok. This opportunity became real thanks to immeasurable support from Far Eastern Federal University and Vladivostok State University of Economics and Service.
The opening ceremony of the Conference was attended by the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, H.E. Mrs. Samantha Power, who gave a key-note speech to the NMUN 2014 delegates. From the very beginning, the team scored two significant victories: Ms. Anna Ivanova (Far Eastern Federal University) was selected to be the Chairperson for the General Assembly Third Committee (Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee), and Ms. Ksenia Shevtsova (Far Eastern Federal University) was selected as the Chairperson of the Economic Commission for Latin America & the Caribbean (ECLAC).
Their achievement was no small feat, as they were selected for the highly prestigious and sought-after positions from hundreds of applicants, despite of a really small size of MUNRFE delegation. In addition to their accomplishments, the rest of the team debated hard in various simulated committees of the United Nations: Mr. Lavrentiy Pak (Vladivostok State University of Economics and Service) debated in the General Assembly Second Committee (Economic and Financial Committee), Mr. Jesse Thomas in the General Assembly Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization Committee), Mr. Alexander Yugay in the General Assembly Third Committee, and Ms. Ksenia Severinova (all of them - Far Eastern Federal University) in the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) as a Head Delegate. For four days, each member worked hard with little sleep and a lot of politicking, in order to achieve the desired results. In between debate sessions, the team had the opportunity to visit numerous professional development opportunities, seminars, and a UN Careers Fair.
Finally, at the closing ceremony at the United Nations Headquarters, the team of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, represented by the Model United Nations of the Russian Far East, was recognized as one of the very few Outstanding Delegations, the highest honor at NMUN-NY. This year MUNRFE accomplished being on top of the world, developing a lasting bond that will serve MUNRFE well in the years to come.
MUNRFE would like to express its deep and sincere gratitude to our long-standing partners: Far Eastern Federal University (personally to the Youth Affairs Department Director, Mr. Ilya O. Yaskov) and Vladivostok State University of Economics and Service (personally to the Institute of Foreign Languages Director, Prof. Tatyana A. Gubaidullina) for their contribution and support.
