II Resolution Contest
The II Resolution Contest was conducted in all three clubs of Model United Nations of the Russian Far East on November, 24th, 2012. Bright minds from the Far Eastern cities gathered to participate in this important interclub competition to discuss such significant and tough for the United Nations agenda as UN Reform in frames of the General Assembly.
The Contest had to begun simultaneously, at 14.00 (GMT+11), in Blagoveshchensk, Khabarovsk, Vladivostok and to finish no later than at 20.00. Then 3 brilliant MUNRFE alumni, Olga Bukach, Marina Katynskaya and Igor Novikov, checked and evaluated resolutions of all three clubs. However, let us announce the results of the Contest later because what is more important is to hear thoughts and feelings of the project participants. They evaluate their results very differently.
For example, Nikita Stroitelev from Khabarovsk shared his memories about the II Resolution Contest. “The Resolution Contest took place at the Pacific National University. As the majority of people weren’t able to start at 14.00, it was decided to begin the debate session at 16.00. By that time 15 participants had been ready for the hot and productive discussion. At the beginning of our debates participants looked like not realizing what was going on because the majority of the people were newcomers, and it was their first real experience in such UN work simulation (except for the final debates of the Autumn Master Classes). However, after that we coped with these difficulties and could ensure the fulfillment of the competition task. Even newcomers could manage with their fears and contribute to the common deal. During the debates there were a lot of proposals concerning the agenda; nevertheless, participants set their choice only on two of them: reorganization of the Trusteeship Council and reforms concerning the veto power in the Security Council. As a result, two oppositions appeared, and it enabled us to practice our public speaking and negotiation skills. But after all disagreements between both sides we could write and adopt the final resolution. It was not so easy to be accomplished, but owing to the team collaboration of our club we could pass through this contest. All participants got only positive emotions and added one more coin of experience in their own coin-collecting box. It was very important for our newcomers, especially. We do believe that other clubs could achieve their success and hope that it was not just a contest to show off, but a good chance for all of us to practice great amount of essential skills for the upcoming XI International Conference”.
Anna Ivanova, Vladivostok Club President, expressed her emotions about the Contest by next thoughts: “The Competition gathered the most active part of VladMUNRFE club together in one place in order to defend the honor of the Club, made all of us forget about whatever we were doing and come to share our best ideas on one of the critical topics discussed in the international community for years. Despite the fact that the number of delegates present was not impressive at all, the session was conducted on a high level thanks to the professionalism and flexibility of the delegates who devoted their time to this event. Thus, it showed that we have a lot of challenges to overcome further and a lot of skills to develop. Not the easiest one, but one of the most productive debate session in VladMUNRFE during the last months!”
Also Blagoveshchensk Club vice-president, Aleksandra Gritsenko, expressed her opinion about the event: “The whole idea of the project was approved by the Presidential team and the Cabinet. The preparations started a week before the contest. With general appreciation of the idea, we faced misunderstanding concerning the exact topic of discussion and content of the resolution, since debaters found agenda too broad and complicated. There were 6 club-members present. The Presidential Team took a special notice on quantity of people in our activities and made several useful conclusions. In perspective, we are looking forward to the continuation of such contests as a good opportunity to prepare to the conference. Furthermore, it is a good practice of debates and revising resolution writing skills”.
