Far Eastern Model UN 2018 Report
On May 4-7, 2018 Model United Nations of the Russian Far East successfully implemented its traditional UN4MUN Conference – Far Eastern Model UN 2018. The event conducted on the premises of Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok gathered around 60 participants from various parts of Russia as well as from Japan, Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Tanzania, Gambia ect. In frames of the Conference 3 committees in the English language were simulated, namely: General Assembly Second and Fifth Committees as well as Security Council. The main topic of the Conference “Sustaining peace” included three agenda items related to the concept - Promotion of International Cooperation to Combat Illicit Financial Flows in order to Foster Sustainable Development, Improving Mechanisms for Accountability and Transparency within the UN System and the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question. Throughout the simulation delegates were striving to find a solution for the issues of global importance as well as to reach consensus regarding the most arguable points.
The program of the Conference also included the significant portion of seminars and trainings on UN4MUN format conducted by the Invited Expert, WFUNA International Model UN Secretariat Staff 2015-2017 - Mr. Caleb Oh. It is also important to mention that the Opening Ceremony of FEMUN 2018 was attended by high profile speakers namely Far Eastern Federal University Deputy Vice President for International Relations Mr. Evgeny E. Vlasov, Consul General of India in Vladivostok Mr. Shubham Kumar and Vice Consul of India in Vladivostok Mr. Ramesh Chand, Second Secretary of the Representation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia in Vladivostok Mr. Evgeny S. Volosastov and Representative of Far Eastern Branch of “Russkiy Mir” Foundation Ms. Elisaveta Lutsenko. FEMUN 2018 participants were also privileged to receive addresses of Interim Head of the Subregional Office for East and North East Asia of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific Dr. Sangmin Nam as well as the Director of the United Nations Information Centre in Moscow Mr. Vladimir Kuznetsov.
In frames of the Conference participants also had an opportunity to enjoy the Cultural Program organized by the partner of the Conference – Far Eastern Branch of ‘‘Russkiy Mir’’ Foundation. The Cultural Program included visits to Primorskiy State Picture Gallery, Museum of Pacific Fleet and Memorial Submarine S-56 Museum as well as attending Primorsky Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre.
According to UN4MUN approach, delegates had an opportunity to play more substantive role performing as the General Assembly Officials and moderating the work of the committees. As the results of elections, the following representatives successfully performed GAOs duties:
Chairperson for the General Assembly Second Committee - Ms. Ekaterina Shalaginova (Ecuador)
Chairperson for the General Assembly Fifth Committee - Mr. Mikhail Boyko (UK)
The duties of the Security Council President were performed by Ms. Galina Salnikova (Poland) in accordance with the rotation order of the UN Security Council members.
Moreover, Mr. Aleksei Stanonis was appointed to the position of the President of the General Assembly.
