MUNRFE delegation at the National Model UN – New York 2019
On March 24-28, MUNRFE delegation participated in National Model UN 2019 in the city of New York, the USA. The team was composed of 6 Far Eastern Federal University students namely Mr. Nikita Volkov, Ms. Galina Salnikova, Ms. Polina Varfolomeeva, Ms. Natalia Zuikova, Ms. Daria Zlydar along with delegation’s adviser – Ms. Anna Timokhina. For a sixth consecutive year, MUNRFE earns delegation awards by demonstrating profound research, leadership abilities, and negotiations skills. This year the team received an “Outstanding Delegation” award being in the list of TOP-25 represented institutions. Moreover, Ms. Galina Salnikova and Ms. Natalia Zuikova were recognized as recipients of the Position Paper award. It is also important to mention that Ms. Anna Timokhina was selected to serve as the Chairperson of the UN Environment Assembly.
Delegates represented the Republic of Malta at the General Assembly First, Second and Third Committees, Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change; UN Industrial Development Organization as well as UN Environment Assembly. The topics discussed within respective committees included: Nuclear Disarmament and International Security; Ensuring Access to Affordable, Reliable, Sustainable, and Modern Energy for All; Strengthening Humanitarian and Disaster Relief Assistance; Capacity-Building for Combating Climate Change in Developing Countries; The Role of Information and Communications Technology in Industrial Development and Addressing Marine Plastic Litter and Microplastics.
In frames of the Conference, the delegation was invited to attend the UN Session in the UN Headquarters devoted to presenting a vision of youth on the ways of achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). On behalf of the Organization, MUNRFE Vladivostok Club President Ms. Daria Zlydar delivered the statement about reaching SDG 13 – “Climate Action”.
During the trip, the team was privileged to attend various entities both in Moscow and New York. At the Office of World Bank in Moscow, the delegation had the briefing with Country Director and Resident Representative for the Russian Federation – Mr. Andras Horvai followed by an interactive discussion moderated by Ms. Yulia A. Komagaeva and Ms. Larisa I. Fugol. MUNRFE members also visited its Official Partner - UN Information Center in Moscow represented by Deputy Director of the UN Information Center Mr. Vladimir S. Pavinskiy.
The delegation was also granted with an opportunity to attend meetings in Permanent Mission of Malta to the United Nations by Permanent Representative H.E. Carmelo Inguanez as well as in the New York University (NYU) by NYU Department of Anthropology Chair Prof. Bruce Grant. The trip was also marked with a first time ever visit to the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations by First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN - H.E. Dmitry A. Polyanskiy. Furthermore, participants had a briefing at the Harriman Institute of Columbia University by Prof. Elise Giuliano.
