MUNRFE organized a panel discussion “North-East Asia on the Way to the Agenda 2030”
On December 4, MUNRFE organized a panel discussion "North-East Asia on the Way to the Agenda 2030. The event was conducted with the aim to provide young people with a unique opportunity to become a part of a panel meeting with experts in the spheres of sustainable development, ecology, international relations, and others, who will take a substantive look at the prospects of the Russian Far East and North-East Asian countries for achieving the SDGs. The key speakers shared their practices on SDGs promotion and attainment in the region and their thoughts on the ways to go forward towards the Agenda 2030 by taking action in their countries and societies.
Key topics of the panel discussion included:
– North-East Asian States on the way to the Agenda 2030: priorities, challenges, and opportunities; – Russian Far East and SDGs: environmental and socio-economic dimensions;
– The role of the youth in sustainable development: opportunities for the youth in North-East Asia;
The discussion was opened by the moderator Dr. Ekaterina Koldunova, Associate Professor, Department of Asian and African Studies, Senior expert, ASEAN Centre in MGIMO University, who delivered a welcoming address as well as presented esteemed guests. Among the invited guests and experts, the discussion was attended by Dr. Vladimir S. Pavinsky, Public Information Officer at the UN Information Center in Moscow, Dr. Sukehiro Hasegawa, President of the Global Peacebuilding Association of Japan, Executive Director for Academic Exchange of the United Nations Association of Japan, Mr. Anton Tsvetov, Deputy Director, Department of Multilateral Economic Cooperation and Special Projects, Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, Dr. Yasushi Katsuma, Professor of International Studies at the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies, Waseda University, Director of Global Health Affairs and Governance at the Institute for Global Health Policy Research in the National Center for Global Health and Medicine of Japan, Visiting Professor at the UN University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability, Co-director of the Master's Program in Global Leadership at the Vietnam-Japan University in Hanoi, Dr. Junichi Fujino, Principal Researcher and Senior Coordinator for Urban Taskforce, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, Dr. Kapil Narula, Senior Researcher, Energy Efficiency Group, Institute for Environmental Sciences, University of Geneva, Switzerland, Prof. Kritzman Caballero, Lecturer, European Studies Program, Ateneo de Manila University, and Ms. Nobuko Kajiura, Sustainable Development Officer at UN ESCAP East and North-East Asia Office.
During the event, the experts discussed various issues within the Agenda 2030 noting the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the achievement of the SDGs. Moreover, in frames of briefings, experts focused their attention on specific SDGs (3, 4, 7, and 16) and described how the work is progressing in their countries towards its accomplishment.
